Today would have been Ronald Reagan's 100 birthday. It seems like only yesterday when in 1980, he won the US presidency and danced the night away in the White House while throughout Washington three and half tons of red, white and blue Jelly Belly jelly beans were consumed at inauguration parties citywide. Jelly Belly was Reagan's favourite candy - his wife Nancy introduced them to him when she was trying to help him quit his pipe-smoking habit. Liquorice was his favourite flavour and it went on from there. Soon Jelly Belly was in Air Force One and the Oval Office. Within two weeks from the day Reagan declared for Jelly Belly the factory in California was 2 years behind in orders! The rest is history. Being the Centenary of his birth, 2011 is a very big deal for the many people who respect and admire Ronald Reagan. What does it take to create a six foot high cake suitably decorated to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 40th President of the United States? Well --- American Chef David Laufer and nine other cooks worked more than 160 hours on the Ronald Reagan centenaryl cake, which includes 25 sheets of edible rice paper, 90 pounds of chocolate, 100 pounds of flour, 200 pounds each of butter and fondant, 400 eggs and a staggering 20,000 Jelly Belly jelly beans! That's some cake! Some celebration too - which starts today and will go into the wee small hours of tomorrow, February 6th which is THE day.
